Tobey: First pee in potty!

I hadn't given up on potty training. I just haven't really put my mind (nor Tobey's) to it. And even recently, he hasn't been that interested in the potty although he will tell us sometimes if he wants his diaper changed.

Tonight at bath, he had that familiar dramatic pause before he's about to pee in the tub. I was able to detect it and asked if he wanted to pee in the potty. I got him out, stood him next to the potty, waited, waited, waited and lo and behold! The glorious trickle! He had pretty good aim too! ;-)

Back in the bath, later on he said he wanted to pee again. I knew that he sometimes pees twice during the duration of the bath so I invited him to the potty again. This time though, he's covered in soap head to toe. So instead of the potty, I grabbed the familiar El Camino Hospital baby blue bowl and let him pee in there. We dumped it down the toilet and said bye.

Then after he's towel dried and diaper and onesie on, he announces pee pee again. This time, I'm not so sure he needs to go but I didn't want to discourage him. I asked him if he's sure and told him how potty isn't playtime and he shouldn't say he wants to go to potty if he doesn't need to. Sure enough, he's standing in front of the potty looking around, not really concentrated. I call his bluff by saying we can always pee tomorrow and we go on finishing the bedtime routine.

HRH Dr. Moore ;-) says to keep potty training positive. Never punish for an accident, etc. I wonder if keeping it positive also means to earnestly listen when he says he needs to go potty. But then what if he's faking it, like the third time tonight? Or he wasn't really faking it (I'm not sure a 2.5 year old is capable) or more so he was so excited, he just wanted to try again. I suppose the demanding side of me feels hey, he did it once, he knows the sensation, and now I want perfection. It's happened for a lot of other milestones like when he went unswaddled, gave up the binky and the bottle. But I should try to be patient, not show frustration if he announces potty at an inconvenient time. Maybe potty training is going to be harder for me than for him.
