Eli: Real food
Eli likes his rice cereal in a way that Tobey never did. We could probably happily feed him rice cereal and formula forever. But alas, it's time to move on.
The cute thing is that Tobey likes to watch me pretend play making formula and rice cereal. Water in the microwave to heat, mix in formula, mix in rice cereal, stir until creamy, and feed. He'll have to learn some new recipes.
So far only:
- Carrots: Big flop. Eli winces and spits out, whether served straight up or mixed with his favorite mush above.
- Sweet potatoes: Mixed with formula, so far he hasn't rejected. But too early to tell if he really likes it as he's been sick (i.e., small appetite).
I've got several jars of organic baby food in the pantry, roaring to go. I have a feeling I'll be using more jars in a pinch than I needed to with Tobey (besides when we were moving). Ironic this post is called "real" food. I still feel guilty for giving too many jars.
Speaking about in a pinch, I am lovin' the formula lifestyle!. I decided earlier this week to move to an alternating nursing and formula routine for Eli so that he gets enough. It just so happens that his "lunch" and "dinner" feedings are the formula feedings which are so convenient if we are out. We got a thermos for warm water, dump and shake into my premeasured bottles and voila, done! It's even easier than my frozen breastmilk when I'd have to go looking for some running hot water.

I can't believe you and other moms out there are making homemade baby food! I am happy if my Terrible Two-year-old agrees to have frosted mini wheats for dinner (I figure its got whole grain goodness in every bite!) And I love my pediatrician for saying, "There's no need to rush the baby into eating baby food. Everything they need is in the formula!" Makes my life a lot easier to give Max a bottle instead of spending a half an hour trying to get a jar into him. Of course, he turns one this week and is way behind his peers with milestones. Hmmm, perhaps I have arrested his development in order to prolong the ease of infancy...
