If not one, then the other
On a rare moment when Tom and I were by ourselves (well, with the kids) without any of our parents around, Tom asked how I was doing. I was thinking that I could use a break from Eli some times, that day in and day out of being Eli's food and entertainment was getting a bit monotonous. So Tom offered to "take" Eli more.
What I forget is that when you have two, a break from one means you "take" the other. So while I was looking for that break from trying to keep Eli entertained and awake, my alternative is to keep Tobey entertained instead. Granted, it's actually easier with Tobey but it takes more energy.
On a related note, so far I feel like we are surviving with two, not only because of parental help, but because Tobey's routine is so straightforward and he's been cooperating as well as could be expected for a two-year old with a new sibling. He's been going down for his naps willingly (he even stopped lunch early once and asked for a nap) and his bedtime routine only sometimes needs a bunch of nudging. At least we know he will reliably go down and he hasn't been waking up when Eli cries right next door. We are blessed and we know it. Just hope our good luck hasn't run out with Eli. Can't tell -- Tom is sleeping, holding Eli on the living room couch right now.
