Eli: Squeaky latch
Eli recently has been "squeaking" sometimes when nursing. He seems to still get enough, despite occasional "bad" feedings where he takes in a gulp of air, coughs, chokes or squirms in discomfort. But I don't want this to become his official latch, possibly causing problems down the line. I think it's kind of my fault because I wasn't as vigilant in correcting his latch as I was with Tobey. There wasn't as much initial pain so the incentive to correct his latch was a bit less. Am thinking of calling in the breastfeeding nazis of Maternal Connections for a consultation. Or dropping in on their support group like I did last time with Tobey (but at 2 weeks old!).
This squeakiness has transferred over to his bottle feeding as well. He has never taken more than 2.5 oz. but he must be getting more from me when he nurses. As a result, he needs to eat again 2 hours after a bottle vs. the 3-4 after nursing. We tried a different bottle/nipple to see if the nipple shape encourages him to take more but as if he knew how to read the markings on the bottle, he stopped today at 2.5 oz. Tom thinks nipple shape isn't the issue but his intake of air. I'm thinking of trying a fancy Dr. Brown's bottle which I've heard about through the baby boards (the baby boards that I never visit anymore!). Hoping either latch correction or different bottle will get him on the road to more effective (and quieter) bottle feeding soon.
