Best friends

I've been tickled pink today (or blue, as the case may be) by the boys. Since the minute Tobey came home from school today, the boys have been the best playmates. They immediately disappeared down into the basement -- somewhere they haven't played much this summer, not just because of the pool but also because they migrated their play area to our family room...unfortunately. They disappeared for a good hour to hour and a half before the neighbor kids came over. And then after dinner, Tobey and Eli read books together on the couch until it was errand time and ever since tonight's errand, they're reading together again, comparing treats that they just got. Since 3:30 this afternoon, I've barely had to intervene in anything, besides Eli complaining that Tobey has more blue blocks that they peacefully resolved when I asked Eli if he even asked Tobey for some blue blocks. It's been so peaceful. So unusual. Maybe they're just making a good show since my parents came into town.

The only thing is I'm afraid to see what state the basement is in. That old thing where when your kids are too quiet, that means trouble's a-brewin'. I don't really want to look. I want to pretend that the boys had a perfect afternoon of playing together.

This afternoon totally reminds me of Tom and Dennis, how when they are together, they will disappear for an hour, usually walking around the house (often in the basement too!) talking about home improvement kind of stuff. And like the boys playing in the basement, I often am afraid to see what Tom and Dennis have come up with after an hour of home improvement brainstorming! But it's totally what I hope for my boys, to be the best of friends when they grow up.
