What are friends for?

I'll blog more about our big event later (I feel like we just had a wedding in the family). But Tom just told me a funny story from Tobey's birthday party.

So Eli was walking and playing in this shallow mud puddle on the edge of our picnic area. I caught sight of it while finishing laying out the food so I asked Tom to get Eli out of the mud. After he got Eli out of the mud, one of our friends said, "Eh, I'd just let him play there. He's got nothing else to do here." Which is true, poor guy, relegated to entertaining himself because Tom and I were both busy with guests and running the party.

Then later Eli goes back to said mud puddle and Tom just watches nearby. Then a different friend says, "Wow, I'm surprised you let him do that."

No wonder we parents these days are so confused.

Sidenote: I didn't think about WHAT the puddle was until now. Although we had trace amounts of rain last week, the rest of the week was the usual dry weather so a puddle could not have lasted that long. That puddle was the only puddle around so it doesn't look like a lawn sprinkler puddle to me. Which leaves only that it might have been some kind of a spill...or leak...from a possible living being, human or canine. Eli's stinky Tevas made me think of it and I just shudder to think what he was playing in today. His stinky Tevas might have been from a nasty smelly diaper we discovered on him AFTER the party was over but still -- what WAS that mud? I pray protection on his little body tonight!
