Kite Runner and 2008 resolutions
I did an unexpected thing on our vacation: I read a book. Not only did I read it, I started and finished it in two weeks. I've had my reading phases in the past (Bridget Jones, Jane Austen books, Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Accidental Asian, Harry Potter 1 & 2) but I'm not really much of a reader. But reading Kite Runner seemed to be spreading through the Changs like a bad cold, starting with Dennis & Denise, then Tom's dad, Tom's mom, Tom and then me. Actually, Tom started it first but then I hogged up the book and finished it first. He's still somewhere in the middle where Amir finds out that...ha ha, I wouldn't spoil it for you.
But anyway, the book was good. I'm surprised I didn't cry until literally the last page. I'm sure I'll cry non-stop through the movie, one of the very few that I could say I read the book first. In a way I couldn't put it down but it didn't quite start out that way. I picked it up to read on the last day or two of Pittsburgh, mainly because there was nothing else to do and I finished reading all the fluff pieces in their Time and US News & World Report mags. I took a test drive in Tom's dad "slice of Heaven", his leather massage recliner under a glowy halogen light and started reading.
My ever-inquisitive Pulitzer prize winning Olympic torch bearing sister-in-law asked us to finish the sentence: "In 2008, I will...". Tom said he would read 5 books. I guess Kite Runner will be #1. I was less ambitious. I said I'd seriously consider going to my 20th high school reunion and work out for it. I couldn't even commit to actually going. A friend's blog committed to understanding raising boys better, her son leaving her a bit perplexed. I'm thinking I should commit to something similar because if she is perplexed, I am perplexed times two. I usually don't bother with resolutions due to the hype but this year I'm wondering whether having a said goal would help me work towards something and feel accomplished instead of feeling wallowing or defeated. Then again, I didn't set out with any goal to read Kite Runner but I feel pretty good about having finished it.
