How did it come to this?
About a year ago, some friends of ours had this weekly schedule after school/evening:
MON - small group
TUE - swim class
WED - Awana
THU - t-ball
FRI - Chinese school
SAT - soccer
I thought that was crazy and put into my mind that we wouldn't get that busy.
And so this is our current weekly schedule:
MON - small group
TUE - swim class
WED - Awana
THU - swim class
FRI - couples group (every other)
Not that much different from our friend's and so the never say never thing rings true again.
So how did we end up at this? Well, we've always had small group on Mondays and this past year added our much enjoyed couples group. At first I thought Awana was not necessary since Tobey goes to Safari Kids on Sunday but along with Tobey's spongelike brain at this age, it became more obvious that SK wasn't as structured and hard core Bible as I remembered Sunday School to be. And maybe that's a good thing and at the same time, we figured it couldn't hurt for him to memorize Scripture. So thus came Awana.
And today starts Tobey's twice a week swim class. Maybe our friends thought so too but this is not as much a recreational activity to me as it is a life skill. And Tobey finally seems a little more comfortable in the water, not protesting if water streams down his face during bath. On the advice from more than one place, we are trying the twice a week schedule with the hope that he will catch on faster and not forget from week to week what he did the previous week. I had hesitations about the YMCA's group lesson, hearing that the kids just hang on the wall and watch 3/4ths of the time. But seeing how expensive the semi/private lessons were, I thought it was worth seeing if group works well for now.
Swim lessons alone impact our week as it leaves little time for me to cook on Tue/Thu. So I'm going to try cooking big portions on Mon/Wed so Tue/Thu is just a matter of reheating. Yum. I hate leftovers. Luckily, the weather has been so cold and rainy that we haven't missed going to the park with our school friends, which just might work out well for this quarter. I think extra park time and swim lessons is a bit much in one day. The swim lessons also impact my morning because I can't put Eli in childcare twice in one day, so I guess I won't be working out on Tue/Thu for a while. Then again, with GymKids and MTO, I haven't been anyway!
